chim chim - I remember going away to Norwich when Clyde Best was in the team, and the Norwich fans keeping up a chant of "Clyde Best is a nigger" all the way through the match.
Loads of our lot took serious exception to this.
Since he only played there twice, it must have been 1973, but I can't remember if it was the 1972-3 or 1973-4 game.

Then again, the irony of him being obese and orange from too many sunbeds was not lost on us who slagged him off for saying it.

West Ham were generally regarded along with dirty Leeds as the worst racists in the country in the 70s and 80s.
That is just a stone cold fact.
In fact 'Harewood you lazy black cunt' was the last time I ever heard overtly racist language that seemed to be condoned in the ground and when you think about it that's not that long ago.
It's one of the only things that has actually improved about modern football and West Ham generally.

Batson has mentioned the banana incident in interviews this week. Don’t think he saw the funny side. The who’s that up a tree and hes a wog songs went on for a couple of years after that and bananas were still being chucked mid 80s - at John Barnes and a couple of the Arsenal players. Bulldog sellers had fucked off long before though.

I was there, and if I recall correctly, three bananas were chucked onto the pitch. Bredan Batson walked over to them, picked one up and ate it. Then he lobbed the other two to Regis and Cunningham who ate theirs. The crowd in the south end of the CR gave them massive applause and as far as I know those three never got any racist abuse at UP again.
Cunninghman continued to get massive abuse for being good and not liking a kicking from Bonds/Lampard, but I don't think there was anything much racist about it. Regis was just massively respected for being a terrifying big lump who could run faster than anyone in the game, as he was everywhere. I remember him absolutely rinsing Alvin from the halfway line on one occassion.
Just my recollection and others may disagree/remember differently.

As I said I remember sitting opposite a bloke we knew on the way to West ham v Watford... maybe 83'ish... loads of nana's in a carrier bag... he was quite happy to chuck them at Bobby Barnes and John...
Rewatched that Whites v Blacks shown last night... pretty hard watch in places... can see that George Berry and Bob Hazell are still majorly fucked off at what went on...

My club had played against a Hayes team with Cyrille Regis in it.
It was before my time with the club but a lot of the players who had played were still at the club. As with all senior clubs every player fancies themselves as a world beater who never quite made for no fault of their own and all the players who had played that day said he was the best player they’d played against, ever, anywhere.
We had two centre halves who were hard on the pitch and just as hard off the pitch and they both said he bashed them in for fun – almost proud of the fact.
Good bloke in the bar after too…………

I've come to the conclusion that the story about the black opposition player picking up and eating a banana thrown from the chicken run is probably apocryphal, as I've heard it said about six different players over the years.
I did see a packet of peanuts thrown at John Barnes once, but probably because that was all they had to hand rather than any implicit racist connotations.

Just watching a documentary on BBC 2 about him and the racism that he and most black players of his era went through and the fact that there was a blacks vs whites game played at the Hawthorns in which he played in 1979.

A fine player. Always had the legs in a foot race with Alvin Martin but when the ball was in the air it was an even contest. RIP Cyrille.

.......saying that, it wasn't great either.
The NF outside the South Bank every game, gassing noises from the South Bank, monkey noises. Not all the time and I never saw a banana being thrown at black players.
Never understood the monkey noises, used to get it occasionally at Upton Park right up until around 7 years ago, we've always had black players so always seem fuckiing idiotic to me regardless.
